The Story of the Autograph

Bert Jones is a former quarterback in the NFL. He played from 1973 to 1982 with the Indianapolis Colts and Los Angeles Rams.

Jones is a native of Ruston, Louisiana. He went to LSU to play for the Tigers but only started two games through the end of his junior year. He split time in his junior year because he didn’t like his head coaches game calling. Then in his senior year he helped the Tigers be a AP Top 10 team for every week but one. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2016.

The Colts drafted him in the first round of the 1973 NFL Draft with the second overall pick. He was followed Johnny Unitas as the starter after Unitas was traded to San Diego. After building his statistics for three years he had the best season of his career in 1976. That year he threw for a league leading 3104 yards with 24 touchdowns, plus another 200 yards rushing with two touchdowns on the ground. That lead to him winning MVP and Offensive Player of the Year. That also earned him his one and only Pro Bowl appearance.

After 1976 he had some pretty good year but injuries would get in his way. It started with a separated shoulder and later a neck injury would force him to retire.

The Score on Bert Jones – 6.5

I had seen that Bert was a pretty reliable signer I was hoping I had some cards of his. Unfortunately this was really all that I had in my doubles piles for football. The older card really just hides the signature. I don’t normally like a new card for an old player like this, but that one came out really well.

Thanks Mr. Jones! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
