The Story of the Autograph

Bernie Nicholls is a former center in the NHL. He played from 1981 to 1999 for the Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, New Jersey Devils, Chicago Blackhawks, and San Jose Sharks.

Nicholls was born and raised in Ontario, Canada. He played for the Kingston Canadians in junior hockey and was drafted by the Kings in the fourth round of the 1980 NHL Draft. He played one more year of junior hockey then moved on to the New Haven Nighthawks of the AHL. The Kings brought him in and he made his debut on February 18, 1982.

He was a great scorer and had seven straight seasons with 30 or more goals from 1983 to 1990, all of those with the Kings except for the last where he was moved to the Rangers before the end of the 1989-90 season. One of those seasons he score 70 goals (1988-89) making him one of only eight players to hit that mark in one season. He also hit 150 points that season making him one of five players to do that. He had three years in his career with over 100 points.

That trade to the Rangers was a shocking one that brought the Kings Tomas Sandstrom and Tony Granato. That happened during All-Star weekend and Nicholls still played for the Western Conference even though he had been traded to the Eastern Conference. His next trad out of New York was a big one too as it brought Mark Messier to play for the Blueshirts. He would be traded one more time to the Devils and then moved on to the Blackhawks and Sharks as a free agent.

Of course this is time in his career that I have the most cards, but I was glad to get Nicholls in a Rangers uniform. Not that he was as good for the Rangers as he was earlier in his career, but its my favorite team. He’s got a messy style of signature but the blue ink looks good on most of these.

Thanks Mr. Nicholls! I’m giving this return a 6.
