The Story of the Autograph
Bennie Blades, full name Horatio Benedict Blades, is a former defensive back in the NFL. He played the vast majority of his career with the Detroit Lions, but spent his last season in Seattle.
Blades grew up in Florida and went to school at the University of Miami. He was a big part of the Hurricanes’ 1987 National Championship winning team and he shares the single season interception record with fellow Miami player Sean Taylor. The Lions drafted Blades in the first round of the 1988 NFL draft with the third overall pick.
He played as a safety and was one of the most physical defensive backs in the NFL. He earned All-Rookie honors in his first season when he was also All-Pro and earned a trip to the Pro Bowl in 1991. Blades helped the Lions win two NFC Central titles and make it to the 1991 NFC Championship Game. He was the defensive captain for five years in Detroit.
Bennie is the brother of Brian Blades and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Bennie has a really great signature. He used a great marker and signs with good size too. The best of this lot has to be that ’90 Topps card because it has the best place to sign. But I really like that ’93 Score card because it give you a good idea of how intimidating he was.
