The Story of the Autograph

Barry Pederson is a former center in the NHL. He played for the Boston Bruins (twice), Vancouver Canucks, Pittsburgh Penguins and Hartford Whalers from 1980 to 1992.

Pederson is a native of Saskatchewan, Canada. He played junior hockey for the Nanaimo Junior A Clippers and Victoria Cougars before being drafted eighteenth overall in the 1980 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins. He would debut with the Bruins the following season. In his first season he set rookie records for goals (44) and points (92) and finished as the runner up for the Calder Memorial Trophy, given to the league’s top rookie.

His years between that first rookie year in 1981-’82 and 1983-’84 were great. In those years he put up at least 92 points. In 1981-’83 he had a career high in goals with 46 and then in 1983-’84 he had a career high in assists with 77 and in points with 116. He made two consecutive All-Star appearances in those years.

While he would continue to have good seasons over the next few years, they wouldn’t compare to those first seasons. His career took a turn in 1984. He was diagnosed with a benign tumor in his shoulder. He had a procedure that removed part of his shoulder muscle and it obviously effected him.

The Bruins traded him in 1986 to the Canucks. That deal sent him to Vancouver for a first round pick (which would be Glen Wesley in 1987 and Cam Neely. He played well as a Canuck, especially as an assist man, recording consecutive 50-assist seasons.

He slumped and experience injuries and was then traded to the Penguins in 1989. While he would struggle in Pittsburgh he was also part of the Stanley Cup winning team in 1991. He moved on to the Whalers for a few games and was released. The Bruins picked him up for the remainder of the year and he retired at 31.

It’s too bad that he has a black jersey on and the card images are busy. Barry does a good job putting a big signature and a good amount of ink on your cards. I’m sure these would look great if they gave him a really good place to sign.

Thanks Mr. Pederson! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
