The Story of the Autograph
Barry Bonnell is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played for the Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners across ten seasons from 1977 to 1986.
Bonnell was born and raised in Ohio. He played on the baseball and basketball teams in high school and then followed that up by doing the same at Ohio State on a full athletic scholarship. He was first drafted during high school by the White Sox in 1971 but didn’t signed. That continued until he finally signed and with the Phillies after they drafted him before his senior year in college witht he first overall pick of the 1975 MLB Draft.
He didn’t make it to the majors with the Phillies though. In fact, he didn’t make it six months in the Phillies organization before being traded to the Atlanta Braves in May of 1975. He would debut with them two years later on May 4, 1977. He spent three seasons in Atlanta before being traded to Toronto in a deal that involved Chris Chambliss.
Bonnell found the best year of his career in Toronto in 1983. That season he played in 121 games and hit .318 with ten homers and 54 RBI. He was known as a clutch hitter with four career grand slams (pretty good for a guy that never hit more than 13 homers in a season and had three seasons of double-digit homers) and led his team in game-winning hits ever year he played. He was also a pretty good field with a good throwing arm.
The Score on Barry Bonnell – 7.0
Barry has a pretty standard signature. It’s not loopy or bubbly, but with all those “Bs” and “l”s it could be. He uses the whole card and did these with a pretty good marker. I like like how his 1978 and 1979 cards came out best. That could have something to do that those include some interesting Braves uniforms though too.
Thanks Mr. Bonnell! I’m giving this return a 7.
