The Story of the Autograph

Art Howe played in the major leagues from 1974 through 1985. During that time he played the infield with the majority being at third base. He played with the Pirates, Astros and Cardinals. He also was a manager for the Astros, Athletics and Mets.

Howe was born in Pittsburgh, PA and after going to the University of Wyoming on a football scholarship, he would ultimately play baseball after some injuries cut his football career short. His hometown Pirates signed him as an amateur free agent in 1971 and he made his first appearance for them on July 10th 1974. But Howe would only spend a couple seasons in Pittsburgh as the Pirates traded him as a “player to be named later” that got them Tommy Helms.

He started playing 100+ games in 1977 while with the Astros. He had some pretty good years at the plate (.293, .283, .296) balanced out by some leaner years (.264, .248, .238) while in Houston. His career high in homers was 10 which he did in 1980 and his career high in RBI was 58 which he did in 1977.

How would move on to St. Louis as a free agent in 1984 after missing the 1983 season with an injury. He only played a few games for the Cardinals in 1985 and would actually move to coaching almost immediately with the Texas Rangers.

The Score on Art Howe – 6.5

Art always has a nice signature. He seems to try to find a good place and a good angle to put his signature and not necessary sign over his face (like the ’85 card). But his signature is always really consistent from what I’ve seen and I’ve never really been disappointed in it or seen smudges or anything like that.

Thanks Mr. Howe! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
