The Story of the Autograph
Tony Fossas is a former left-handed reliever in the major leagues. He played from 1988 through 1999 with the Rangers (twice), Brewers, Red Sox, Cardinals, Mariners, Cubs, and Yankees.
Fossas was born in Havana, Cuba but went to high school in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended the University of South Florida and was first drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the ninth round of the 1978 MLB Draft. He chose not to sign and continue with college. The next year the Rangers drafted him in the 12th round and he signed. He spent several years in the minor with the Rangers and made his major league debut on May 15, 1988 at the age of 31.
Like a lot of relievers he moved around a lot and never spent too long in any one spot, especially at the end of his career. He found his role as a left-handed specialist though and many times faces some of the great left-handed hitters in the game. His unorthodox delivery certainly helped him in that role as well.
You can see in his stats that he had some odd numbers as far as appearances go, especially in Boston:
- 1992: 60 games, 29.2 innings
- 1993: 71 games, 40 innings
After retiring as a player he went on to be the pitching coach at Florida Atlantic University. He later played the same role with the Dayton Dragons in the minor leagues.
The Score on Tony Fossas – 7.0
Tony went with the red marker which you don’t see very often. It came out the best on the two Brewers cards but it goes best with the Red Sox cards. He certainly fills up the cards pretty well and you can see some good capital letters in that signature.
Thanks Mr. Fossas! I’m giving this return a 7.
