The Story of the Autograph

Swen Nater is a former center in the ABA and NBA. He played for the Virginia Squires (twice), San Antonio Spurs, and New York Nets in the ABA and then the Milwaukee Bucks, Buffalo Braves/San Diego Clippers, and Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA.

Nater is a native of the Netherlands. Because of their financial situation, his mother, stepfather and older brother moved to the United States and left he and his sister in an orphanage in Europe. They reunited a few years later thanks to a TV show and Swen then went to school in California. He attended a junior college and then went to UCLA where he won two NCAA titles backing up Bill Walton.

He was drafted by The Floridians in the 1972 ABA Draft and then went to the Virginia Squires in a separate draft after The Floridians went under. He was also drafted the next year in the NBA by the Bucks, the first player to be a first round pick without ever starting a college game. He was the 1974 Rookie of the Year in the ABA and made two ABA All-Star teams with the San Antonio Spurs.

The Bucks were his first NBA stop and they traded him to the Buffalo Braves who later became the San Diego Clippers where he was a local favorite. In 1980 he led the NBA in rebounding and was the only player ever to do that in both the NBA and ABA. After his time in the NBA he went on to play in Italy for one season before retiring.

Swen has a solid signature. One of the things I like best about this autograph is how the color of the marker really matches the colors of the jersey on the card. I think you know that I like when guys use a marker that goes with what’s on the card. I don’t know that it was really meant to be that way with this one, but that’s how it came out and I like it.

Thanks Mr. Nater! I’m giving this return a 6.
