The Story of the Autograph
Pete Smith is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1987 through 1998 with the Braves, Mets, Reds, Padres, and Orioles.
Smith was initially part of the Philadelphia Phillies organization. The Phillies drafted him in the first round of the 1984 MLB Draft with the 21st overall pick. But he never played for the Phillies. They traded him before the and of 1985 along with Ozzie Virgil in a deal that brought the Phillies Steve Bedrosian and Milt Thompson. He would debut two years later with the Braves on September 8, 1987.
Smith started his career well enough and the Braves hoped that he would be part of their pitching strengths for years to come. Unfortunately his ERA (and his record) didn’t necessarily cooperate. It went as high as 5.06 in 14 games with ten starts in 1991. 1992 was a much better year, when he had a chance to play. He went 7-0 in 12 games and 11 starts. But the Braves ended up trading him to the Mets for the 1994 season.
From there he bounced around after being granted free agency by the Mets with stops in Cincinnati, San Diego, and Baltimore. That included a 1995 season spent entirely in the minor leagues. He would play his last game with the Orioles on September 24, 1998.
The Score on Pete Smith – 6.0
Pete has a pretty great signature. I wish the Upper Deck card cooperated a bit more with showing it off. The Score card does a good job of it, but I have never been a fan of that design (especially that color scheme). I love how loopy his signature. The “S” is the best part with the small top and the BIG bottom.
Thanks Mr. Smith! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
