The Story of the Autograph

Wilbur Wood is a former left-handed pitcher who played in 17 seasons from 1961 through 1978. He played for the Red Sox and Pirates early in his career and then spent twelve years with the White Sox.

Wood was born and raised in Massachusetts and was signed out of high school by the Red Sox in 1960 and would start making appearances for them the next season. He was traded to the Pirates and it was more of the same, pretty much up and down years to the minors.

It was after being traded to Chicago when Hoyt Wilhelm advised him to rely on his knuckleball that he really found his place. He had some really great years with the White Sox as both a reliever and a starter. As a reliever he would lead the league, and one time the majors, three times. He would also lead the league in games finished twice. Then he became a starter and led the majors in games started twice. He would league in wins twice with 24 but also once lead in losses with 20.

He was an All-Star three out of four years from 1071 through 1974.

These are good signatures from Wilbur, but they really aren’t the greatest cards to show off his signature. One of the cards I sent was his 1977 Topps card where it has a facsimile signature. Unfortunately he personalized it (“To Bill”) but he didn’t actually sign it. It was as if he thought he already did. I noticed someone else got a return and he did sign it so it probably was just a mistake.

Thanks Mr. Wood! I’m giving this one a 5.
