The Story of the Autograph
J.C. Martin is a former catcher in the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, and Chicago Cubs. He played from 1959 through 1972 and won a World Series Championship while with the Mets in 1969.
Martin was board in Virginia and was brought into the White Sox organization as an amateur free agent in 1956. He broke into the majors in 1959 and became a regular by 1961 as an infielder. But injuries, the end of someone else’s career, and some trades forced the White Sox to convert Martin into a catcher in 1962. In offseason prior to the 1968 season he was moved to the Mets along with Tommie Agee and Al Weis.
With the Mets Martin was one of two backup catchers behind Jerry Grote with the other being Duffy Dyer. He was involved in a controversial play where he could have been called out for interference as he bunted and ran inside the baseline. The throw went off of his arm and the winning run score in the 10th inning of Game four. He was traded to the Cubs prior to the next season and later became a coach and broadcaster for the Cubs.
His best seasons were in Chicago when he had the best chance to play. Still he had a .223 average and never hit more than five homers or drove in more than 32 RBI.

This one came out pretty great. When these old cards don’t bleed they really can take a signature well. J.C. signed it in a pretty good spot. Even though he has what I might call an “old guy signature” (i.e., a little shaky) I love the way he takes the tail and and crosses the “t”.
