The Story of the Autograph
Jon Matlack is a former left-handed starting pitcher who played for the New York Mets and Texas Rangers. His thirteen year lasted from 1971 through 1983.
Matlack was drafted by the Mets in 1967 with the fourth overall pick in the MLB Draft. He made his major league debut on July 11, 1971, but only appeared in seven games with six starts that first year and maintained his rookie status. In 1972 went right in to the rotation and got off to a 6-0 start with a 1.95 ERA in the first months of the season. At the end of the year he had a 15-10 record and a 2.32 ERA and won the NL Rookie of the Year award. That year he also gave up Roberto Clemente’s 3000th and final hit of his career.
The next year Matlack helped the Mets to the NL Pennant although his record wasn’t that great. But he was impressive in the playoffs. He held the Big Red Machine to two hits for the Pennant. In the Series he pitched great but lost two games including Game 7.
Unfortunately for Matlack, the Mets just didn’t have a great hitting team for the rest of his time there. He was an All-Star from 1974 through 1976 with a great record in two of those years and an overall great ERA but never really had any support from the offense. He was moved to the Rangers in a four team deal after the 1978 season. While he had a few good years with the Rangers, elbow surgery would limit him a bit and he retired after the 1983 season.
The Score on Jon Matlack – 6.5
Jon has a really classic signature. He signs on a line and has always signed with a good marker for me. It always comes out with really consistent quality too. I’m super happy about the cards I got him to sign. I never really had a lot of 70’s Mets cards but those are the perfect ones. I had picked those up at a card show and I’m happy I got them turned around quickly.
Thanks Mr. Matlack! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
