The Story of the Autograph

Ed Farmer pitched in the majors for 11 seasons. During that time he played for a ton of teams: Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies (twice), Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox,  ad Oakland Athletics. The longest time he spent with any one team was about two and half season (Cleveland and Chicago) and most times he was only on a team for a year. These days he works the Chicago White Sox radio broadcast.

Farmer was born in Illinois and went to high school in Chicago. He would later have his best seasons in a White Sox uniform. But he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the fifth round of the 1967 Draft. He was traded, released, signed, etc. several times. But he ended up in Chicago by way of a trade from the Rangers in 1978. He had 14 saves in 1979 with 13 coming after the All-Star break. Then he had 30 in 1980 and made the All-Star team for the one and only time in his career.

Farmer was known for a feud with Al Cowens. He actually broke his jaw and several teeth. This caused a brawl the next year when Cowens hit a grounder and instead of running to first, he attached Farmer on the mound. And this was during the best year of Farmer’s career. More recently, Farmer got into some hot water for advocating to hit Royals batters in 2015.

Ed has an fine autograph, I just wish it wasn’t in ball point on these cards. And on top of that it’s red ball point pen which doesn’t necessarily come out really well. The ’83 Topps card actually wouldn’t be too bad with a red signature, but not with this pen. The ’81 Fleer card though is out of place. I’m wondering if Ed signs sideways to fit his signature on the card without signing over himself, to show the red pen he signed with better, or just because he likes to sign sideways (a la Jim Leyland).

Thanks Mr. Farmer! I’m giving this return a 3.
