The Story of the Autograph

Mike Caldwell pitched left-handed in the majors over a 14 year career. From 1971 through 1984 he pitched for the San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds, and Milwaukee Brewers.

Caldwell grew up in North Carolina and graduated from North Carolina State University. He was drafted by the Padres in the 12th round of the 1971 MLB Draft. He made is debut in September of that same year against the Braves. A couple years later Mike was traded to the Giants for Willie McCovey and Bernie Williams. He was traded again in 1976 to the Cardinals. He was traded again before the 1977 season to the Reds and after just 14 games he was traded to the Brewers.

After all that moving around, Caldwell found a home in Milwaukee and he played there from 1977 to 1984. In 1978 he had his best season with a 22-9 record and a 2.36 ERA. He even led the AL with 23 complete games and was the AL Comeback Player of the Year and finished second in the Cy Young voting to Ron Guidry. He continued to have great season with the Brewers and even won two games in the 1982 World Series against the Cardinals.

Mike has a big signature, but it didn’t come out well on all of these cards. The ’78 Topps and the ’80 Topps kind of did really absorb into the card. At least I think that’s what it looks like. They aren’t the worst I’ve seen. I will say that the 1980 with the facsimile signature looks like one of the best with a facsimile that I have.

Thanks Mr. Caldwell! I’m giving these a 6.
