The Story of the Autograph

Dyar Miller is a retired right-handed relieve pitcher. He had a 7-year playing career in the major leagues from 1968 through 1984. He pitched for the Orioles, Angels, Blue Jays and Mets.

Miller graduated from Utah State and made himself available for the draft but was never picked. He signed with Phillies and they tried to make him a catcher. That failed pretty quickly and the Phillies released him. So he went on to try to be a pitcher and the Orioles signed him in 1969. He was in their minor league system through 1975 as a starter and the Orioles figured this was his last shot.

Even though he put up the best ERA in Spring Training of 1975, Earl Weaver told him he would start in the minors. Miller didn’t like that too much and threw a fit. Weaver felt bad for them and after not finding a good place for him in a trade he worked as a reliever in the minors. He was successful and the Orioles found a place for him.

He moved to the Angels, Blue Jays, and the Mets until the Mets released him after the 1981 season. He tried to make it again with the Cardinals but after three years in the minors his career was over. He went on to coach and work in the front office for several teams from 1985 through 2012.

The Score on Dyar Miller – 6.5

Dyar has a pretty standard signature. The first thing I like about it though is that it looks like he snuck it in a just right place to see the autograph well. The second thing I like is the note. I love that it’s on some stationary from a hotel. That makes me think of my grandfather because he would have pens and pads he saved from all sorts of places that he would use as scrap paper.

Thanks Mr. Miller! I’m giving this a 6.5.
