The Story of the Autograph

Jeff Hornacek is a former guard in the NBA. The one-time All-Star played from 1986 to 2000 with the Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers and Utah Jazz.

Hornacek is a native of Illinois. He went to college at Iowa State and was a walk-on who would become an all-conference Big Eight player. He helped the Cyclones to the Sweet Sixteen in 1986. The Suns picked him with the 46th overall pick in the second round of the 1986 NBA Draft.

He got more and more playing time in Phoenix in his six seasons there, the first six of his career. And he improved each year, of course with his stats reflecting his increased playing time. In 1991-’92 he had his best season in the league, putting up a career high 20.1 points per game and earning his one and only All-Star nod.

Hornacek was traded to Philadelphia in 1992 with Andrew Lang and Tim Perry, in exchange for Charles Barkley. He moved to point guard because Hersey Hawkins was doing well as the shooting guard in Philly. But he wasn’t as successful there. The Sixers would trad him to the Jazz for Jeff Malone and he moved back to shooting guard there.

It was in Utah that he saw the best success of any team played on. He was the third option behind Karl Malone and John Stockton. The trio helped get the Jazz to back-to-back finals in 1997 and 1998. He also won the three-point contest while with the Jazz (1998 and 2000). Unfortunately they would run into the powerhouse Chicago Bulls dynasty of those years. Knee injuries would force his retirement in 2000.

He’s been a coach since the 2011 season. He worked as an assistant to start in Utah and then was the head coach of the Suns and Knicks from 2013 to 2018. In more recent years he’s been with the Rockets as an assistant.

Jeff does a really good job on these cards. I like that I got him wearing a Suns uniform because he had some of his best years there, but I’ll definitely be trying him again to see if I can get him with other teams. I think that Skybox card might be one of the best that I’ve gotten. Usually 1990 Skybox is terrible for signatures.

Thanks Mr. Hornacek! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
