The Story of the Autograph

Jerry Manuel is a former middle infielder and manager in the major leagues. He played in five seasons between 1975 and 1982 with the Detroit Tigers, Montreal Expos and San Diego Padres. He later managed the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets.

Manuel was born in Georgia and grew up in California. He was drafted out of high school by the Tigers with the twentieth overall pick in the first round of the 1972 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut on September 18, 1975. He played sparingly in the majors. In his second season with the Tigers he made it into 54 games, but hit only .140.

He was part of a few trades in his career, four to be exact. Three of them happened about nine months. The first traded was when Tigers traded him the Expos in 1980 for Duffy Dyer. Then in May 1982 e was traded to San Diego for Kim Seaman. A month later he was sent back to the Expos. Then the following February, in 1983 he was traded from the Expos to the Cubs.

Manuel started coaching in Montreal in 1991. He was with them through 1996 and then moved on to the Marlins in 1997. The White Sox made him their manager in 1998 and he was with them through 2003. When he was done in Chicago he moved on to the Mets as a coach in 2005 and was made manager of the Mets in 2008, a position which he held through 2010. His best season as a manager was 2000 when he led the White Sox to a first place finish in the AL Central, winning 95 games. They would lose in the ALDS in a sweep to Seattle.

The Score on Jerry Manuel – 3.0

This is not a great one from Jerry. I don’t like the ball point and this is part of the reason why. Jerry’s singature isn’t very defined and that gets accentuated when its done in ball point. If it was in marker it would have taken up a bit more space. But the darker jersey (which wouldn’t seem dark if this was in marker) doesn’t help here though.

Thanks Mr. Manuel! I’m giving this return a 3.
