The Story of the Autograph

Ben Petrick is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1999 to 2003 with the Colorado Rockies and Detroit Tigers.

Petrick was born and raised in Oregon. He played football and basketball in addition to baseball in high school. He was even recruited to play football as a safety. He had planned to play baseball for Arizona State but the Rockies drafted him in the second round of the 1995 MLB Draft and he decided to head to professional baseball right away instead.

After several years in the minors he made his major league debut on September 1, 1999. In just 19 games to close out that season he hit .323 with four homers and twelve RBI. He earned more playing time over the next two years and then in 2002 he started to struggle more and only played in 38 games. The following season he was traded to the Tigers and then was released. He tried to continue in the minors but retired.

When he retired he disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease after the 1999 season. While he continued to try to play in those years it was clear that the disease was not going to allow him to play at the highest levels.

Ben did a great job on these cards, but they don’t all show his signature off well. The ’00 Fleer card is my favorite because I love that design in general. But one thing I really like about these cards is that they are all really fun. Most are some kind of variation or die cut or something that makes them really interesting.

Thanks Mr. Petrick! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
