The Story of the Autograph

Cliff Speck is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues and really was a minor league lifer. He played in just one season in the majors with the Atlanta Braves in 1986.

Speck is a native of Oregon, being born in Portland and growing up in Beaverton. The Mets drafted him in the first round of the 1974 MLB Draft with the 17th overall pick. He was released by the Mets in 1978 and then went to the Phillies (1978), Orioles (1981), White Sox (1983), and Braves (1985).

After a twelve year wait he made his major league debut on July 30, 1986. He would pitch in thirteen games with one start and go 2-1 with a 4.13 ERA. But it was back to the minors after that where he stayed playing until 1988.

One interesting minor league nugget was that he played in the longest professional game. It was a 33 inning game between the Rochester Red Wings and Pawtucket Red Wings. Speck ended up losing the game, giving up a bases loaded, no out single to Dave Koza to lose the game 3-2.

The Score on Cliff Speck – 5.5

Cliff must have been pretty jazzed to finally get to the majors. I bet he was also jazzed when he got his own card the next season as part of the classic 1987 Topps set. I’m glad that I found these. They really aren’t the greatest for a signature, but these could be the only Cliff Speck cards so beggars can’t be choosy.

Thanks Mr. Speck! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
