The Story of the Autograph

Jim Mora, Sr. is a former head coach in the National Football League. He was a head coach from 1986 to 2001 with the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts.

Mora was born and raised in California. In his college days he played as a tight end for Occidental College and one of his roommates was Jack Kemp, a future quarterback with the Buffalo Bills and U.S. congressman. He went on to be a coach at Occidental and then moved on to several positions at D-1 schools. Eventually he started coaching in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.

His head coaching career in the pros started with the Philadelphia/Baltimore Star of the USFL. He was there from 1983 to 1985 and lead the team to a 48-13-1 record and all three USFL Championship games. He won two of them in ’84 and ’85 and was the Coach of the Year in 1984. The NFL came calling and he moved on to the New Orleans Saints the next year.

With both the teams he coached in the NFL, the Saints and the Colts, they were known as not always very good, especially the Saints at that time. Mora was able to continue his success in the NFL and would eventually lead those team to the postseason in his second year with each team. He led the Saints to three consecutive playoff appearances from 1990 to 1992 and won double digit games with the four times and with the Colts twice. But for all the success he had with them in the regular season, it didn’t translate to the postseason. Mora lost every postseason game his teams appeared in going 0-6 for his time as a head coach.

One of the things Mora is famous for though are his quotes during press conferences. A couple of my favorites:

  • In reference to the Saints poor performance during the 1996 season, “…we just got our ass totally kicked. We couldn’t do diddly poo offensively.”
  • His playoffs tirade with the Colts, “”Playoffs? Don’t talk about… playoffs?! You kidding me? Playoffs?! I just hope we can win a game! Another game!”

The Score on Jim Mora Sr. – 7.5

Jim has a nice signature, kind of on the fancy side. I’ve been really loving getting those Pro Line cards signed and that’s a pretty good one. It’s probably one of the cleanest cards related to the image of the whole set. Some of them can tend to be pretty busy with those Starter jackets.

Thanks Mr. Mora! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
