The Story of the Autograph

Walt Terrell is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1982 through 1992 for the New York Mets, Detroit Tigers (twice), San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Terrell was born and raised in Indiana. He went to College at Morehead State University in Kentucky. He was drafted twice out of college before he signed. First by the Mets in the 15th round of the 1979 MLB Draft and then by the Rangers in the 33rd round of the 1980 Draft. He never made it to the majors with the Rangers though. He and Ron Darling were traded in exchange for Lee Mazzilli in 1982.

He made his first appearance for the Mets on September 18, 1982. After three years with the Mets, they traded him to the Tigers for Howard Johnson. He found a lot of success in the first three years with the Tigers going 15-10, 15-12 and 17-10 from 1985 through 1987. 1987 was definitely the best of his major league career.

He moved around a bunch in 1989 and 1990. He was traded first to the Padres after the 1988 season and then in mid-season he was moved to the Yankees. Then after the 1989 season he was signed by the Pirates who released him in mid-1990 and he was picked up by the Tigers. Unfortunately he never found the success he had in his earlier stint with Detroit.

I’ve always loved returns from Walt. He always signs with a good marker and his signatures come out really strong. The 1984 cards I had were picked up at a card show that’s generated me a lot of other signed cards via TTM so it’s good to see that’s still paying off.

Thanks Mr. Terrell! I’m giving this return a 7.
