The Story of the Autograph

Tony Mandarich is a former offensive lineman in the National Football League. He played in six season from 1989 to 1998 with the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts.

Mandarich was born and raised in Ontario, Canada but ended up going to high school to play football in Ohio. He went on to attend Michigan State University and was a standout for the the Spartans. He was through of as the “best offensive prospect ever” and was drafted second overall in the 1989 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers.

Unfortunately he never lived up to the lofty expectations put on him. That started with him holding out which kept him out of training camp until a week before the first game of the season. He had attitude issues and the combination of the bad play and everything led him to being considered one of the biggest busts of all time.

There was speculation that steroid use was part of it all which he wouldn’t admit to until years later. After being cut by the Packers he developed a drug and alcohol problem. After going into rehab and getting clean during three years out of football he’d come back with the Colts. He played a few seasons before retiring due to injuries.

Tony has a small signature for being a big dude. It’s almost looks like ye signs either “Tony” or “T Mandarich” (sort of). Ultimately everything else is bigger than the signature on the card. I think I also received a note that he’s charging for his signature. I don’t think it was an unfair amount but it’s any player or former player’s right to charge what they want.

Thanks Mr. Mandarich! I’m giving this return a 6.
