The Story of the Autograph

Tom Grieve is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played during nine seasons from 1970 through 1979 with the Washington Senators, Texas Rangers, New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals.

Grieve is a native of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and was drafted by the Senators out of high school as the sixth overall pick of the 1966 MLB Draft. He first appeared on July 5, 1970 and made it into 47 games that year. But he wouldn’t make it back to the majors until 1972. At that point the Senators had moved to Texas and became the Texas Rangers.

With the Rangers Grieve’s best season was 1976. He appeared in 149 games which is by far the most in his career. In fact he only appeared in more than 100 games twice with the other year being the season prior. In the 1976 season he got 600 plate appearances and hit .255 with 20 home runs and 80 RBI.

In 1977, Grieve was involved in a four team trade that sent him to the New York Mets. The Rangers netted Jon Matlack among others. He spent just the one season in New York and was traded to the Cardinals after the season. The Cardinals released Grieve in May of 1979 and although he signed again with the Rangers he never appeared in a major league game again.

After retiring in 1979 he joined the Rangers’ front office and working on the Rangers’ TV broadcasts. He was GM of the team from 1984 through 1994. He then went  back to TV and has the longest tenure of any person in team history. Grieve and his son Ben are the first father-son pair to be chose in the first round.

Tom has a pretty solid signature. These don’t seem to have been done with a strong marker. The good thing though is that these cards are all bright and tend to show off the signature well. I really like the way he does his “T” with that little loop in it going into the “o”.

Thanks Mr. Grieve! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
