The Story of the Autograph

Tim Stoddard is a former major league relief pitcher. He played from 1975 through 1989 with the White Sox, Orioles, Cubs, Padres, Yankees and Indians. He’s one of only two men to ever play in a World Series and a Final Four Championship game.

Stoddard grew up in Indiana and was a tall guy (ultimately 6’7″) and e played baseball as well as basketball in high school. His basketball team went undefeated and won the Indiana state championship. From there he went on to NC State university and continued in both sports. In baseball the Wolfpack won four ACC Championships while he was there. In basketball they won the 1973-1974 NCAA Championship by avenging their only loss that year by beating the UCLA Bruins.

The White Sox drafted Stoddard in 1975 and he made his debut in the major with them that same year. But after that one appearance he was in the minors and eventually traded to the Orioles where he played more than any other stop in his career. He had some good seasons that included a trip to the World Series where they lost to the Pirates in 1979.

That appearance made him the first player to appear in both the Final Four and the World Series. Kenny Lofton would later match the feat.

Tim has a fine autograph but man did I find some crap cards for autographs. The only card that really works to see it well is the ’88 Topps card. I’ll have to find some other cards of Tim’s and try again. Hopefully I can find some with him as an Oriole.

Thanks Mr. Stoddard! I’m giving these a 5.
