The Story of the Autograph

Steve Shields is a right-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. Oddly he played for the same number of teams that he did seasons in the big leagues. He played from 1985 to 1989 for the Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and Minnesota Twins.

Shields is a native of Gadsden, Alabama. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the tenth round of the 1977 MLB Draft out of high school. He never made the majors with the Red Sox though. He was first granted free agency in 1983 and then signed as a free agent with the Braves shortly after. He appeared on the Braves roster in 1985 and ’86 and was traded at the very end of the 1986 season for Darryl Motley.

Another trade later in 1986 sent him to the Mariners with Scott Bankhead and Mike Kingery for Rick Luecken and Danny Tartabull. He became a free agent again and got his best shot in the majors came with the Yankees in 1988. That year he appeared in 39 games and put up a 5-5 record with a 4.37 ERA.  He during one more season in 1989 with the Twins and then never appeared in the majors again.

The Score on Steve Shields – 5.5

Steve has a really tight, stacked signature. You can see it’s more vertical than wide. I definitely recognize the two “Ss” in his first and last name and other than that it’s pretty standard. I think the downside on these is that the cards don’t do him many favors. They are dark or mix in with the color of the marker.

Thanks Mr. Shields! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
