The Story of the Autograph

Shane Rawley is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1978 to 1989 with the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins.

Rawley is a native of Wisconsin. He went to Indian Hills Community College in Iowa where he was drafted twice. The first time he was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fourth round of the 1974 MLB Draft and then he was drafted in the second round of the 1974 MLB Draft by the Montreal Expos. While that might not make sense, the first was in January in the regular phase and the second was in June in the secondary phase. He signed with the Expos but never made it to the majors with them. They traded him to the Cincinnati Reds in 1977 and then later that same year they traded him to the Mariners for Dave Collins.

He made his major league debut with the Mariners on April 6, 1978. He spent the first four years of his career in Seattle and worked as a reliever. He was then traded to the Yankees in 1982 where he stated more games and began a transition to being a starter. By 1983 he was definitely a start with 33 of his 34 appearance being starts. That year he put him the most wins in his career to that point with a 14-14 record and a 3.78 ERA.

The Yankees would traded him to the Phillies in the middle of the 1984 season. He put up a winning record in every year he was in Philadelphia except for his last. He was an All-Star in 1986 and then put up a career high 17 wins the following season. The Phillies traded him to Minnesota where he closed out his career in 1989.

I’ve had pretty hit or miss successes with Shane over the years. I’ve seen him sign one or two, then sign all, that is if he returns them at all. This one is appreciated though because they came out so well. I think the 1988 Fleer card is my favorite, but the 1980 Topps card is pretty good too.

Thanks Mr. Rawley! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
