The Story of the Autograph

Roy Thomas is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1977 to 1987 with the Houston Astros, St. Louis Cardinals, and Seattle Mariners.

Thomas was born in Virginia but grew up in California. He was drafted out of high school by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round with the sixth overall pick of the 1971 MLB Draft. He wouldn’t make it to the major with the Phillies though as he was traded the White Sox with Alan Bannister and Dick Ruthven for Mike Buskey and Jim Kaat in December of 1975. A year later he was drafted by the Mariners in the Expansion Draft and then traded before the 1977 season to Houston for Larry Milbourne. He made his major league debut Houston on September 21, 1977.

He only spent the end of that one season in Houston and was picked up by the Cardinals for the 1978 season. He work mostly out of relief for a few years but had some starts too. Just a few years later he went to Oakland in the Rule 5 Draft and was in their minor league system for a year and they traded him to the Mariners. He had some better years in Seattle including a 7-0 1985 season with a 3.36 ERA.

This is a touch one from Roy. The signature is small and the thin marker won’t always cut through what’s going on with the images on the cards. I think the 1985 Topps card is the best version. There are some other guys that we know with this style like Phil Garner.

Thanks Mr. Thomas! I’m giving this return a 5.
