The Story of the Autograph

Ron Hextall is a former goalie in the NHL. He played for the Philadelphia Flyers, Quebec Nordiques and New York Islanders from 1986 to 1999.

Hextall is a native of Brandon, Manitoba in Canada. He came from a hockey family with both his father Bryan and uncle Dennis playing in the league, but also his grandfather Bryan who is a Hall of Famer who spent eleven seasons with the New York Rangers. He played for a few teams in junior hockey but eventually made it back to Brandon to play with the Wheat Kings. The Flyers drafted him in the 1982 NHL Draft and he stayed in Brandon for two more years.

He played with the Flyers in their 1984 training camp but would be placed on one of their farm teams. He finally made the big club in 1986. It was an amazing rookie year as he earned his an All-Star nod and made the All-Rookie team, but also won the Vezina and the Conn Smythe trophy for the playoff MVP even though the Flyers would lose to the Oilers in seven games.

He had the reputation for being a hothead. He retaliated for when teammates got hit and took bad penalties. That said he was a good goalie. He just always had a super aggressive style of play.

He would have a contract dispute with the Flyers prior to the ’89-90 season and didn’t take part in training camp. That led to some time off the ice with injuries when he did come back. He continued to wrestle with injuries over the next couple of years too. In 1992 he was traded to the Quebec Nordiques in the deal that brought Eric Lindros to Philly and would help them to the playoffs. He then was traded to the Islanders the following season.

Then in 1994 he was brought back to Philly where he finished out his career.

I sent a few cards for Ron to sign but it appears he only signs one. I probably could have watched the websites I use a little closer before I sent to him. He certainly puts a bunch of ink on your cards. That said, it’s tough to see because of how busy this card its.

Thanks Mr. Hextall! I’m giving this return a 6.
