The Story of the Autograph

Rick Honeycutt had a super long career in the major leagues. He played for six different teams over is 21 year career: Seattle, Texas (twice), Los Angeles, Oakland (twice), the Yankees, and St. Louis. In the first half of his career he was a starter and the second he worked in relief. In total he pitched in almost 800 games with 268 starts and over 2100 innings. He appeared in 30 postseason games, including 20 League Championship Series games and seven World Series games.

Rick was born in Tennessee and would grow up in Georgia. He played baseball at Tennessee from 1973 through 1976 and was an All-American pitcher and first baseman.  He also won an SEC batting title wit a .404 average. The Pirates drafted Rick in the 17th round of the 1976 draft and he spent 1.5 years in their system before being traded to the Seattle Mariners. He would make his first appearance with the Mariners in August of 1977.

He made the All-Star team in 1980 with the Mariners and then in 1983 with the Rangers (and later the Dodgers). In 1983 he also led the AL in ERA at 2.42. He was never a strikeout pitcher but he had great control. His best win-loss mark was 16-11 as a starter in ’83 with bot the Rangers and Dodgers. That was probably is greatest individual season. As for team success, he was a member of the ’89 Athletics who won a championship.

In 1980 he got caught using a thumbtack to doctor the baseball. He was ejected and suspended for 10 games.

Rick as a nice signature. I think I like it better than what I scored it, but the marker that he uses and the way these cards were it just isn’t ideal. I’ve got some other cards from Rick and he seems to always use a thin blue marker. That just doesn’t always overpower what’s on the card. My favorite thing about this return though is how long it was out for. I sent this out in March of 2010 and that’s two years before I moved. It took almost a year more than another return I got from Carlos Baerga. I’m really surprised the mail returned it to me.

Thanks Mr. Honeycutt! I’m giving this a 7.
