Before I get into my normal weekly “thoughts” intro, I do want to make it clear that I’m not into the whole “wait outside Target for cards” or “harass the stock people/distributor” or whatever the hell is going on in the card isle these days.
There’s a balance to everything and over the past year the balance that we’d been comfortable with has been “ruined”. In reality it’s just changed though. I want cards to be more affordable and I want to be able to find cards. I also want more people interested in cards. I probably want them more interested in cards the way I am and not as a flipper or trying to make a quick buck and take advantage though. I haven’t bought a new offering of cards in over a year now and I miss it.
I say all this to go back to what we are seeing with Topps Opening Day. There are some that will say, “this set is for kids.” Yes, I agree it is an “entry level” offering and should be less expensive. Theoretically that is “for kids.” But are you complaining because you wanted to buy it? Isn’t anything for sale to whoever wants to buy it.
Grown adults buy and are interesting in:
- My Little Pony
- Train Sets
- Board Games
- Video Games
- and BASEBALL CARDS!!!
Again, I don’t necessarily like what’s happening, but it kind of is what it is. Or as one of my employees likes to say, “it’s not what it’s not.” Not trying to rile anyone up, just trying to do my own venting and deal with it.
Stay safe out there!
The Review
Here’s what happened on the blog last week:
- Monday: Matt Young
- Tuesday: Pat Corrales, Kevin Glover
- Wednesday: Wayne Fontes
- Thursday: Spike Owen
- Friday: Pedro Garcia
- Saturday: Glendon Rusch
- Sunday: Dennis Leonard
It seems like I’ve been doing it a lot lately… missing perfect opportunities to tie together #twofortuesday posts. This week it should have been pairing Kevin Glover and Wayne Fontes together as they were both related to the Detroit Lions. I think the hard part is that I need to look at this stuff as I am preparing the post for the next week (REMINDER!).
The Preview
Here’s what I have coming up for this week:
- Monday: Just the Tippy of the iceberg…
- Tuesday: Just one “m”…
- Tuesday: Hero Joe…
- Wednesday: An interesting name, or so my kids thought…
- Thursday: Moe, Moe, Moely, Moely…
- Friday: A spring Meadows…
- Saturday: The X-Factor…
- Sunday: The Duffster…
There’s been a lot of variety lately. While this is all baseball, it certainly still has a more eclectic feel to me. I guess that matches how I collect TTMs and cards in general.
Other Notes
It was another solid week of 16 returns. Still trending toward the lighter side of things but the end of the week was promising. I feel like this has still been more consistent since I didn’t bother with Spring Training this year at all. It will end up a pretty good month, though not as good as the two previous months this year.
I’m still higher on the failure rate. I’m chalking that up to being toward the end of the big planning and writing effort I had done. That’s why I’ve tried to be a bit more flexible recently and judged what to send out based on what I see all of y’all getting back.
Have a great week!
