The Story of the Autograph

Phil Nevin is a former infielder and outfielder in the major leagues and is a current manager. He played from 1995 to 2005 with the Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Anaheim Angels, San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins. He currently manages the Los Angeles Angels.

Nevin is a native of California. He was first drafted out of high school by the Dodgers in the third round of the 1989 MLB Draft, but he chose not to sign. Instead he went on to attend Cal State Fullerton. He would play both football and baseball while there. While he succeeded in football as a punter and placekicker, it was baseball where he excelled. He helped lead the team tot he 1992 College World Series before they lost, was voted the CWS Most Outstanding Player, and won the 1992 Golden Spikes award.

The Houston Astros drafted him with the first overall pick in the first round of the 1992 MLB Draft. He would make his first appearance with them in the majors on June 11, 1995. He didn’t spend much time there though as he was traded two months later to the Detroit Tigers for Mike Henneman. He played sparingly in the majors with the Tigers except for the 93 games he played in 1997. The Tigers traded him to the Angels with Matt Walbeck for a minor league player. But he only spent a season there before moving on tot he Padres in another trade.

He found his way with the Padres. He got more playing time than anywhere else and built up to his one and only All-Star appearance in 2001 when he hit a career high .306 with other career highs in homers (41) and RBI (126). He would earn MVP votes that year as well as 2004, his last full year with the Padres. From there he moved around in some more trades over the next few years.

More recently he’s been a coach in the minors and the majors and this year replaced Joe Maddon as the manager of the Angels. The Angels signed him to a one year deal this October.

I’m actually surprised I hadn’t tried getting him to sign previously. Maybe I had and I just never got a return from him. But I’ll definitely be trying him again next year. I ‘m so glad I sent Phil cards of him in a Padres uniform since he had so much success there. Maybe there will be a manager card or a team card he can sign for me with the Angels next season.

Thanks Mr. Nevin! I’m giving this return a 6.
