The Story of the Autograph

Pete Broberg is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He worked mostly as a starter between 1971 and 1978. Over that time he played for the Washington Senators, Texas Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, and Oakland Athletics.

Broberg is a native of Palm Beach, Florida. He was drafted twice before signing. The first was in 1968 in the first round with the second overall pick by the Oakland Athletics, but he didn’t sign. Instead he enrolled at Dartmouth. Three years later he was taken by the Washington Senators with the first overall pick of the 1971 MLB Draft. He went straight to the majors and debuted on June 20, 1971.

He started 18 games that first season and went 5-9 with a 3.47 ERA. He stayed with the Senators as they moved to Texas and became the Rangers. His record and ERA didn’t improve though. The Rangers eventually traded him to Milwuakee for Clyde Wright. He would play two years in Milwaukee before going to the Mariners in the 1976 Expansion Draft with the 35th pick.

The Mariners then traded him to the Cubs for a player to be named later, eventually Jim Todd. The next season the Cubs traded him at the end of Spring Training to Oakland where he would appear in his last major league game on October 1, 1978. He went to the Dodgers as a free agent but never appear in the majors again.

The Score on Pete Broberg – 6.5

Pete used a really thick marker on this one. While it doesn’t let you see any of the definition in his signature, it really helps cut through things on the card like the facsimile signature on the 1975 and 1977 Topps cards. I think my favorite of this bunch is the 1975 Topps card for how the Rangers uniform goes with the blue marker.

Thanks Mr. Broberg! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
