The Story of the Autograph
Pat Combs is a former left-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1989 to 1992 and spent his entire career with the Phillies.
Combs was born in Newport, Rhode Island and grew up in Houston, Texas. After high school he went on to attend Baylor University. The Phillies drafted him in the first round of the 1988 MLB Draft with the eleventh overall pick. The next year he made his debut on September 5, 1989. Prior to making his debut he hit every level of the Phillies system on his way to the bigs in that one year.
With just a month left in that first season he took his chance and showed a lot of promise. He went 4-0 with a 2.09 ERA in six games with six starts. That included a complete game shutout. The next season he went 10-10 and his ERA jumped to 4.07 but that year include three complete games with two of the being shutouts. Unfortunately he would keep going down hill for Combs over the next two years.
These days he lives back in Texas and is a consultant for various professional sports teams with regard to player development. He worked with Tom House to help pitchers and quarterback perfect their throwing and in more recent years he wrote a book.
The Score on Pat Combs – 6.0
While his signature is little, he sure finds a way to put a good amount of ink on your cards. He’s another one of those guys that I find it funny how he changes things up on the cards. Each bible verse is different and it seems like he personalizes at least one of your cards every time.
Thanks Mr. Combs! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
