The Story of the Autograph

Michel Goulet was one of the most prolific goal scorers of the 1980s, a dynamic left winger known for his pinpoint accuracy and offensive consistency. A Hall of Famer and Quebec Nordiques legend, Goulet’s career spanned over 15 seasons, leaving an indelible mark on the NHL.

Born on April 21, 1960, in Peribonka, Quebec, Goulet grew up during a golden era for Canadian hockey. He honed his skills in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), playing for the Birmingham Bulls when the team briefly moved to the World Hockey Association (WHA). When the WHA folded in 1979, Goulet joined the Quebec Nordiques, who merged into the NHL.

Goulet quickly established himself as one of the best pure goal scorers in the league. His combination of speed, a wicked wrist shot, and hockey IQ made him an offensive force. From 1981-82 to 1987-88, Goulet recorded seven straight 40+ goal seasons, including four consecutive 50-goal campaigns. Playing alongside playmakers like Peter Stastny, he was the centerpiece of a Nordiques team that was highly competitive during the mid-1980s.

One of his most memorable seasons was 1983-84, when he posted 56 goals and 122 points, ranking among the league’s elite scorers. His offensive prowess earned him multiple NHL All-Star selections and solidified his reputation as one of the league’s top left wingers.

As the Nordiques began to rebuild, Goulet was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1990. Though past his prime scoring years, he remained a reliable offensive contributor and a respected veteran presence. Unfortunately, his career came to an abrupt end in 1994 after suffering a severe concussion when he crashed into the boards headfirst. The injury forced him into retirement at the age of 34.

Following his playing career, Goulet remained involved in hockey. He worked as a scout and executive, serving in various front-office roles, including with the Colorado Avalanche (the relocated Nordiques franchise). His contributions to the game earned him induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998.

Goulet finished his NHL career with 548 goals and 1,153 points in 1,089 games, making him one of the greatest goal scorers of his era.

Michel Goulet’s legacy is that of a consistent, electrifying goal scorer who dominated the 1980s with his offensive firepower. Though his career ended prematurely, his impact on the game remains strong, particularly in Quebec, where he remains a Nordiques icon. His Hall of Fame induction was a fitting recognition of a player whose talent and contributions to the sport will never be forgotten.

The Score on Michel Goulet – 6.5

Michel has a pretty open signature. It’s mostly his initials, and even them it’s mostly just the “M”. I’ve seen another of these recently, but this is another chance at a cool capital G that didn’t get taken. I think my favorite of these is the 1980 Topps card. Those were the first hockey cards I remember seeing as a kind, but also the blue marker goes with the Nordiques card.

Thanks Mr. Goulet! I’m giving this return a 6.5.

This is my second successful return from him. To see the first return, check out my post from October 2021.
