The Story of the Autograph

“Hard-Hittin'” Mark Whiten is a former major league outfielder. He played from 1990 to 2000 with the Toronto Blue Jays, Cleveland Indians (twice), St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, and New York Yankees.

Whiten is a native of Pensacola, Florida. He went to Pensacola Junior College and was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth round of the 1986 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut on July 12, 1990. He had a great outfield arm, and if you couldn’t tell from his nickname, he could hit a little bit. But he could also be a bit inconsistent in the field and at the plate.

His first season with the Cardinals, 1993, was a pretty memorable season and maybe the best of his career. He played in 152 games and his a career highs for homers (25) and RBI (99) with a .253 average. He also had the fifth-best outfield assists in the NL with 9. But the most notable part of that season was a doubleheader against the Reds on September 7th. In the second game he hit four home runs and drove in 12 runs to tie the single-game record for both. At the time he was the 12th player to hit four homers in a game.

Despite all the chances with different teams, he only made it into postseason games once with the Indians in 1998. After his major league career he played for the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League.

Mark was a one-per-request type of guy. But after another more recent request from him was returned to me, it looks like he is now charging. I think it was $15 per card according to his note. I probably should have sent a Cardinals card to him to have something of him in the uniform for his homer/RBI accomplishment. But I’m glad this one came back successful regardless.

Thanks Mr. Whiten! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
