The Story of the Autograph

Manny Mota is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1962 to 1982 for the San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, Montreal Expos, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mota is a native of the Dominican Republic. He was originally signed by the New York Giants in 1957 as an amateur free agent. He made his major league debut for them five years later and they had moved to San Francisco by that time. The Giants would end up trading him tot he Houston Colt .45s with Dick LeMay for Joey Amalfitano. But before he could appear with them he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Howie Goss and cash.

He established himself as a really good hitter with the Pirates. He had a .297 average during his time in Pittsburgh with 19 homers and 203 RBI. His best year there was 1966 when he hit .332 with seven triples, five homers and 46 RBI. He went to Montreal in the 1968 expansion draft and played a year there. The following year he was traded to the Dodgers with Maury Wills for Ron Fairly and Paul Popovich.

He continued his hitting success in Los Angeles but he didn’t get the same playing time as he did in Pittsburgh. Still he hit .315 as a Dodger with twelve homers and 226 RBI and added in 26 stolen bases. He made the All-Star team, his one and only in 1973 and got to play in a few postseasons while in Dodger Blue.

After his playing days were over he went into coaching and was part of the staff for the 1988 World Series winning team. He actually started as a coach before his playing days were over.

I love Manny’s zig-zag style of signature. I feel like I’ve said this a lot lately but the blue marker with the Dodger blue is just awesome. I really like the 1980 Topps Highlights card because it shows a record he had. It’s nice to get special cards like that signed. I know from a card perspective they aren’t super special like a rookie or something like that. But I feel like with a signature it makes them really awesome.

Thanks Mr. Mota! I’m giving this return a 7.
