The Story of the Autograph

Lyle Overbay is a former first baseman for the Arizona Diamondbacks (twice), Milwaukee Brewers (twice), Toronto Blue Jays, Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees. His fourteen year career in the majors lasted from 2001 to 2014.

Overbay was born and raised in Centralia, Washington. He went on to play baseball for the Wolfpack of the University of Nevada, Reno. From there he was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 18th round of the 1999 MLB Draft. He debuted two years later on September 19, 2001 after being named the franchise’s minor league player of the year.

He didn’t become a full time player until he moved on to the Brewers in December of 2003 when he went to their with Chris Capuano, Craig Counsell, Chad Moeller, Jorge De La Rosa, and Junior Spivey in exchange for Shane Nance, Richie Sexson and a player to be named later. He had a couple really good years with the Brewers including 2004 when he hit .301, led the majors with 53 doubles and added 16 homers and 87 RBI.

He moved to the Blue Jays in another trade and killed it in his first year with them as well. That year he hit a career high .312 with a career high 22 homer and 92 RBI and threw in another 46 doubles. He was with the Blue Jays longer than any other organization (except when you add all his stints with the Diamondbacks) and was there for 5 years from 2006 to 2010.

He moved around a whole lot after that as a free agent and then getting released.

Lyle could be a one per type of guy as I sent him a couple. But sometimes I think guys also actually read what you write and if you focus on one team they might just sign for you on that team’s card. I’m probably going to try him again on a Diamondbacks card because I’m trying to get more Diamondbacks signatures.

Thanks Mr. Overbay! I’m giving this return a 7.
