The Story of the Autograph

Luis Tiant is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1964 to 1982. During that 19 year career he played for the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and California Angels.

Tiant is a native of Cuba. His father played for the New York Cubans and the days of the Negro Leagues. He was noticed by the Indians when he was 16 and they recommended he go to the Mexican League. From there the Indians purchased his contract before the 1962 season from the Mexico City Tigers. He made his major league debut two years later on July 19, 1964.

He worked as both a starter and a reliever during his years in Cleveland. The first few years there saw him have a pretty good ERA and pretty much a .500 record. Then he had a pretty drastic up and then down year. In 1968 he made his first All-Star team and saw MVP votes when he went 21-9 with a 1.60 ERA in 34 appearances with 32 starts, striking out 264 that year. But in 1969 he fell back to earth with a 9-20 record while giving up career highs in homers (37) and walks (129).

He was traded to the Minnesota Twins after the 1969 season along with Stan Williams in exchange for Dean Chance, Bob Miller, Graig Nettles and Ted Uhlaender. He only spent a year there and then he was off to Atlanta who would release him in May of 1971 and then to Boston just two days after his release. It was there where he spent the most significant part of his career.

He would play really well in his eight seasons in Boston from 1971 to 1978. He put up winning records every year except one and that included five seasons with 15 wins or more and another season with a sub 2 ERA. He earned two more All-Star appearances and was part of the World Series team that lost to the Reds in 1975. He also had three years that he earned Cy Young and MVP votes.

After Boston he moved on the New York, Pittsburgh and California. He played in the Senior Leagues in the late 80’s and coached in the Dodgers and White Sox systems after that. He was on the Hall of Fame ballot but was never elected in with a peak of 30.9% of the votes in his first year. He’s been considered again since then but still hasn’t made it to Cooperstown.

Luis is a pretty good signer. Years ago I got him for free but these days he does charge a fee. I’ve seen different experiences with that so I would just check recent returns for what people have been sending close to when you make an attempt. I didn’t realize it at the time but in both of these he is signing autographs and I love that.

Thanks Mr. Tiant! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
