The Story of the Autograph
Ken Berry played 1962 to 1975 in the major leagues. During that time he was an outfielder (mostly in centerfield) with the Chicago White Sox, California Angels, Milwaukee Brewers, and Cleveland Indians.
Berry was born in Missouri and raised in Topeka, Kansas. In high school he played football, basketball and ran track, in addition to playing baseball. He continued playing football and basketball after he went to Wichita State. The White Sox signed him as an amateur free agent in 1961. He made his debut the next year on September 9, 1962.
Berry spent the majority of his career in Chicago. He was a great fielder and earned an All-Star appearance in 1967 when the White Sox battled for the pennant. In 1970 and 1972 he went on to earn Gold Glove Awards. While he had some good seasons with the White Sox in 1966 and 1967. I think his best season might be 1972 with the Angels. That year he hit .289 with five homers and 39 RBI in 119 games and put up a 3.9 WAR.
After baseball he’s done some interesting things. In 1988 he was part of the Eight Men Out case as a baseball coach. More recently, in 2012 he wrote two children’s books, Artie the Awesome Apple and Clyde the Clumsy. Apparently he honed his storytelling craft by entertaining his kids (he’s a grandfather now) by telling them stories on the way to spring training.
The Score on Ken Berry – 6.0
This signature of Ken’s is a great example of a signature that doesn’t work as well with the marker he used. His signature is on the small side and he used a pretty think marker. That tends to bunch everything together. He put the signature in a great spot on the card though.
Thanks Mr. Berry! I’m giving this return a 6.
