The Story of the Autograph

John Orton is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1989 to 1993 and spent all of his time in the majors with the California Angels.

Orton is a California native who was born in Santa Cruz and grew up in Soquel. He was first drafted by the Mets in the 17th round of the 1984 MLB Draft while he was still in high school be he didn’t sign with them. The Angels drafted him three years later in the first round with the 25th overall pick of the 1987 MLB Draft out of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He made his first appearance two years later on August 20, 1989.

He was up and down to the minors a lot and never appeared in more than 43 games in a season. Those 43 games came during the 1992 season when he put up career highs across the board with a .219 average, two homers and 12 RBI. He played his last game in the majors for the Angels on July 4, 1993.

After his time as a player Orton managed in the White Sox and Rockies organizations.

John has a pretty standard signature but it comes out really well. Unfortunately these are really dark or busy because of the Angels uniforms or the busy nature of catchers cards in general. I have to make sure to try to get Scott Leius to sign the dual prospect card.

Thanks Mr. Orton! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
