The Story of the Autograph
John Gelnar is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played in five seasons from 1964 through 1971 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Pilots and Milwaukee Brewers.
Gelnar was born and raised in Granite, Oklahoma. He later played baseball for the Oklahoma Sooners in college before signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1963. He made his major league debut a year later on August 4, 1964.
He was traded to the Royals after the 1968 season but never played in Kansas City. Instead they moved him to the Seattle Pilots in a deal that brought back Lou Piniella. But the Pilots time in Seattle was limited and Gelnar made the move with them to Milwaukee. The Brewers then traded him to the Tigers in 1971 but he never appeared in another major league game.
Gelnar’s best years were in 1969 and 1970 with the Pilots/Brewers. Those were the years that he got the most chances including 92 appearances with 10 starts and and ERA between 3.00 and 4.00. He didn’t appear in more than 10 games in any other season.
The Score on John Gelnar – 7.0
John has a pretty great signature for an older guy. Sometimes, as anyone gets older, their signature gets a little shakier, but not his. He signs in a great marker and although its a bit darker where he signed on the card, it came out great.
Thanks Mr. Gelnar! I’m giving this return a 7.
