The Story of the Autograph

Joe Nolan is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played during eleven seasons from 1972 through 1985 with the Mets, Braves, Reds, and Orioles.

Nolan was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He earned a football scholarship to Missouri, but the Mets drafted him with their second round pick in 1969 and he chose to sign with them. He made his major league debut at the end of the 1972 season on September 21. He would make it into four games and they would be the only ones he would play as a Met. He bounced back down to the minors and was traded to the Braves in 1974.

He continued to be up and down but while he appeared in a four more games in 1975 for the Braves, he wouldn’t get significant time until 1977 and he stay in the league as a back up catcher from there. He moved on to the Reds as a free agent in 1980 and would play catcher for them over Johnny Bench. Bench was toward the end of a long career behind the plate and was playing more first base at the time.

After the Reds he moved on to the Orioles where he backed up Rick Dempsey. That included the Orioles run to the 1983 World Series where he appeared in two games with three plate appearances.

Joe has one of those scratchy signatures. It looks like he tries to find the best spot to sign your cards, but probably likes the angle of the 1981 Fleer card if he had the choice I am guessing. The 1983 Topps card is probably the most awkard angle but maybe he is avoiding signing his face.

Thanks Mr. Nolan! I’m giving this return a 7.
