The Story of the Autograph

Jim Gott pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers. He played from 1982 through 1995 and while starting his career as a starter, primarily was used as a relief pitcher. This year he was the bullpen coach for the Phillies.

Gott was born and raised in California. In high school he was named his league’s most valuable player in baseball, but it was a football scholarship that BYU was offering him while he was also recruited to the baseball team. In 1977 he instead decided to sign with the Cardinals after they drafted him in the fourth round of the draft. He played in the Cardinals minor league system for a few years.

In 1981 the Blue Jays made him the first pick in the Rule 5 draft. He made his first major league appearance the next year on April 9, 1982. His first win came while facing Hall of Famer Jim Palmer in May of that year. He moved on to the Giants via trade in 1985 and then to the Pirates wen they claimed him off waivers in 1987. He would end up breaking their single-season record for saves with 34 in 1988. He had elbow surgery in 1989 and missed most of the season. He signed with the Dodgers in 1990 and spent the largest chunk of time with them from 1990-1994.

Jim has a great autograph, it’s just too bad he played for a team with a black jersey. I think these came out better in the pictures than they did in person. I really like how his “J” and G” work together in his signature. I also like that he just signs “JGott” essentially. I’m sure I have some more cards of Jim that I’ll send at some point.

Thanks Mr. Gott! I’m giving this return a 7.
