The Story of the Autograph

Jeff Shaw is a former right-handed relief pitcher and closer in the major leagues. He played from 1990 to 2001 with the Cleveland Indians, Montreal Expos, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Shaw is a native of Ohio and went to Cuyahoga Community College where he was drafted by the Indians in the first round of the 1986 MLB Draft with the first overall pick. After a four year trip through the minors he made his first appearance on April 30, 1990. He began his career more as a starter with twelve appearances that first year, nine of them starts. But he would only ever start two more games after that.

In 1992 he was signed by the Royals as a free agent and then a month later traded to the Montreal Expos. He’d move on to the White Sox via trade and then to the Reds via free agency before they traded him to the Dodgers for Paul Konerko and Dennys Reyes. He had been a good enough reliever up until his time in Cincinnati and then he got the closer role in 1997 and led the NL with 42 saves. That success in the closer role brought him to L.A. where he put up 48 between the Reds and Dodger the year he was traded, also the first of his All-Star nods.

He continued to be a successful closer through to the end of his career when he put up 43 saves in his final season in Los Angeles. That earned him his final All-Star appearance in his last year in the majors.

The Score on Jeff Shaw – 7.0

Jeff has a sort of standard messy style of signature. That “S” stands out as the biggest letter most times when he signs and I think it looks good there in the middle of his autograph. I think my favorite of these is the 2000 Topps because of his years with the Dodgers, but also because the blue markers always go well on a Dodgers card.

Thanks Mr. Shaw! I’m giving this return a 7.
