The Story of the Autograph

Jeff Newman is a former catcher and first baseman in the major leagues. He played from 1976 to 1984 and spent the vast majority of his career in Oakland. The last two years of his career he spent in Boston.

Jeff was born and raised in Fort Worth, TX where he played baseball and basketball in high school. He went to TCU and earned a degree in Education while playing for the Horned Frogs as a third baseman. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 26th round of the 1970 MLB Draft.

He spent several years in the minors and originally started playing first, third and outfield. He didn’t start catching until 1972. The A’s purchased his contract in 1975 and then he got his shot the next season and debuted on June 30, 1976.

His best season by far was 1979. That year he played in 143 games and hit .231 with 22 home runs and 71 RBI. He earned a trip to the All-Star game that year as the representative for the A’s.

Jeff has a nice signature but some of these cards just don’t allow it to get shown off, mostly because they are dark. The 1979 Topps card is my favorite of the lot. I actually love cards that come from a guys best year and that certainly was Jeff’s best year.

Thanks Mr. Newman! I’m giving this one a 6.
