The Story of the Autograph

Jeff Garcia is a four time Pro Bowl quarterback who played in the NFL for 11 years from 1999 through 2009. He’s best known as a 49er which is where he had his greatest success, but he also played with the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Bucs. All of those last stops were for a year at a time except for Tampa and then he made it back to Philly at the end of his career.

Jeff was born and raised in California and played in college at San Jose State. But he wasn’t drafted in the NFL when he got out of school (of course they thought he was too small). He was picked up as an undrafted free agent  by the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL in 1994. He backed up Doug Flutie there and started when Flutie was hurt. That started a QB controversy until Flutie went on to Toronto. He ultimately was the Most Outstanding Player in the Western Division, led the team to a Grey Cup and was named the Grey Cup MVP in 1997.

He went on to backup Steve Young with the 49ers in the NFL. After Young was hurt Garcia took over, but it didn’t all go well that first year and Jeff was benched. The next year started a great run by Garcia and the 49ers. From 2000 through 2002, Garcia made the Pro Bowl. He threw for 4200+ yards in 2000 and followed that up with 3500+ and 3300+ the next two years. In 2000 and 2001 he had back to back 30+ touchdown years. While Garcia and Terrell Owens seems to be successful on the field, it was not great off the field and a lot of their back and forth went through the media.

After San Francisco Jeff never really had a great year and moved around a lot until Tampa Bay where he put together two pretty good years and made the Pro Bowl again in 2007.

Jeff has a fine autograph, but I think the old facsimile autograph on the card gets in the way of this one. I was really hoping I had a 49ers card for Jeff. I just wasn’t collecting in those days though. The thing I do like about Jeff’s autograph is that it is big and fills up the card enough.

Thanks Mr. Garcia! I’m giving this one a 5.

I don’t mind giving out a PO – PO Box 8977, Rancho Sante Fe, CA 92067-8977, but this was from Spring of 2018 so almost two years ago to the day at this point. Just an FYI. I haven’t been monitoring recent returns for him.
