The Story of the Autograph

Greg A. Harris is a former relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1981 to 1995 with the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, Montreal Expos (twice), San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees.

Harris is a California native. He was first drafted by the California Angels after high school in 1974 but decided to go to college at Long Beach City College instead. In 1975 the Mets chose him and he decided to remain in college at that time. Then the following year the Met came calling again and made him a seventh round choice in the 1976 MLB Draft. He would play for five seasons in the minor before making his major league debut on May 21, 1981.

He began his career as a starter with the Mets and would do it in a few other seasons as well. He went 3-5 in his first season with a 4.46 ERA in sixteen games with fourteen starts. Before the next season started he experienced the first of two trades of his career when he was sent with Jim Kern and Alex Trevino to the Reds for George Foster.

He would move around a bit before settling in with the Rangers in 1985. There he had three successful season, mostly in relief. He started nineteen games of the 41 appearances he had and had his only losting season with the Rangers. After a bit more moving he had several years in Boston, including in 1993 when he had a career high and league leading 80 appearances for the Sox.

Harris was a natural righty, but could pitch left-handed as well. He was never allowed to do this by any team he played for until 1995, his final season. The Expos were playing the Reds and in the second to last game he pitched left-handed to two batters, one he walked and one he induced a ground out. His glove, which was custom made for this purpose, is on display in the Hall of Fame.

The Score on Greg A. Harris – 7.0

BraveSTARR Score LogoBraveSTARR Score 7

Greg has what looks like a signature with an initial and then his last name. This isn’t the “G” that I like to see (I just don’t think its as interesting as a true cursive capital “G”, but he makes it so big that makes up for it. These came out really well but I especially like the 1988 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Harris! I’m giving this return a 7.
