The Story of the Autograph

Glendon Rusch is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He worked as both a starter and a reliever a career that lasted from 1997 to 2009. During that time he played for the Kansas City Royals, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, and Colorado Rockies.

Rusch was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. He was set to play for the University of Washington in college but was drafted by the Kansas City Royals out of high school in the 17th round of the 1993 MLB Draft. Four years later he debuted for the Royals on April 6, 1997.

Rusch started his career as a starter with the Royals. He couldn’t put together much success though and was traded to the Mets in 1999. While he put up a .500 record in 2000, that would end up being his best year as pretty much a starter only and it helped the Mets reach the World Series. But just a few years later he put up a 10-16 record with those 16 losses leading the league.

In September 2006 he was diagnosed with life-threatening blod clot in his lungs. He missed the rest of the season and was released. But after missing the 2007 season, he came back with the Padres first and later the Rockies to end his career in Colorado.

Glendon appears to be an initials signer. It just looks like he uses a “GR” to sign. One thing that got me about this card as a Mets fan is the black jersey. There’s been a lot of talk about bringing these back. Normally I am not a big fan of the black jerseys, but it goes great with the black marker he signed with. That said with regard to the black jerseys, I nostalgia is a toxic impulse and I wouldn’t mind seeing the black at certain times of the season.

Thanks Mr. Rusch! I’m giving this return a 7.
