The Story of the Autograph

George Foster is a former outfielder in the major leagues. His eighteen-year career spanned from 1969 to 1986. During that time he played for the San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets, and Chicago White Sox.

Foster was born in Alabama but was in California when he went to high school. He spent a year at El Camino College before being drafted by the Giants in the third round of the 1968 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut the following season on September 10, 1969. He was with the Giants through the middle of the 1971 season before he was traded to the Reds, where he would eventually become a big part of the Big Red Machine.

From 1975 to 1981, Foster would appear in five All-Star games, earn a Silver Slugger in 1981, and best of all, be MVP for the 1977 season. That year he led the majors with 52 home runs and 149 RBI while hitting .320 for the season. This after winning two consecutive World Series championships with the Reds the prior two seasons. While he was looking for a new deal to stay with the Reds, they wouldn’t meet his demands and he was traded to the Mets for Greg Harris, Jim Kern and Alex Trevino before the 1982 season.

The Mets were bottom of the barrel at that time and looking for someone to help them turn it around. Unfortunately while he was still good at times, he was no longer great like he was with the Reds. With more acquisitions and talent around him his numbers got back up a little bit as he had more help in the lineup. In 1986, on their run to a World Series, the Mets released Foster and he picked up with the White Sox to close out his career.

The Score on George Foster – 6.0

George signs pretty small on the cards. I think some of that is because he looks like a guy who likes to find a good spot for his signature on the card. So when there isn’t a great place to put it, he probably tries to fit it in where he can. I think this marker is a little on the dry side too and that doesn’t help. Still, great to get a member of the Big Red Machine to put some ink on these bad boys.

Thanks Mr. Foster! I’m giving this return a 6.
