The Story of the Autograph

Frank Duffy is a former shortstop in the major leagues. He played from 1970 to 1979 with the Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians, and Boston Red Sox.

Duffy is a native Californian. He was played baseball, basketball and football in high schools and is one of several major leaguers to have come from there. He went on to attend Stanford University and was drafted twice before signing. The first was by the Braves in the third round of the 1966 MLB Draft, but he didn’t sign. The second was by the Reds in the first round with the sixth overall pick of the 1967 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut with them on September 4, 1970.

He played just 19 games with the Reds in that first season and into the second. In May of 1971 he was part of a lopsided trade that sent him to the Giants for George Foster who would be a big part of the Big Red Machine teams of the 1970s. He finished out the season with the Giants organization and only played in 21 games in the majors. Then he was part of another lopsided traded that sent him and Gaylord Perry to the Indians.

Duffy got his first big chance right off the bat with the Indians. He was pretty much the starter for his entire stint there. His best years were 1973 and 1974 when he his .263 with eight homers and 50 RBI and then .233 with eight homers and 48 RBI. After his time in Cleveland he moved on to the Red Sox in another trade and finished his career with Boston.

Frank looks like he tries to find the best place to sign on each card. He doesn’t necessarily avoid signing over himself, but looks like he’ll do it if that’s the best place for it. I think my favorite is the 1975 card because you get the best look at his signature. But I normally had the cards that already have the facsimile signature on it.

Thanks Mr. Duffy! I’m giving this return a 6.
